Marcus Aurelius and Prayer

Marcus Aurelius and Prayer

“VII. Prayers of the Athenians:
Zeus, rain down, rain down
on the lands and fields of Athens.
Either no prayers at all — or ones that are as straightforward as that.

Excerpt From: Emperor of Rome Marcus Aurelius. “Meditations.” Book #5

VII. The form of the Athenians’ prayer did run thus: ‘O rain, rain, good Jupiter, upon all the grounds and fields that belong to the Athenians.’ Either we should not pray at all, or thus absolutely and freely; and not every one for himself in particular alone.

Not the first time but it bears a kind of repeating as it addresses a deeper part of my metaphysical training — easily winnowed from that quote.
