St. Benedict

Saint Benedict. Something monastic.

What attracted my attention in the saint’s medallion? The equal-arm cross. I tend to refer to it as the “Cross of St. George,” although, I’m sure, that’s s misnomer. It’s a British-heraldry image, to me. The equal-arm cross, not the Roman Torture Device, I like the Cross of St. George, English Warriors, the way I see it, the Red Cross on their shields and tunics.

I favor the symbolism with the four arms, like spokes in the wheel, to me, delineating the cardinal points.

The medal? Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas!

Still, I prefer my own slogan.

Laeti edimus qui nos subigant!

The St. Benedict that started this diversion? I’m wearing it right now. It was a gift. (And you thought this was about tony SA housing?) In a “religious articles” gift shop, on the road, a heavily hispanic accent, the lady said, “Here, you need this. And one for your lady friend. Tell her to pin it to her underwear.”

It’s supposed to ward off the devil.
