Pirates, piracy, eBooks &c.

The background was from a trusted news source, so I didn’t bother to fact check. The daVinci Code sequel outsold in digital format before the hardback form.

I’m not a huge fan of eBooks, but that’s me. The format is easy to produce, that’s for sure, and simple to handle, more or less, although, in some cases, it’s less than more. As an example, the digital version of my San Pedro Creek is a big file, and choked at least one download. I know, it was a family member, and I had to hear about it. Might think about updating software. The book format is disproportionately expensive, for what the book is, just words and a few high-def pictures. Paperback book.

Expensive pictures, and frankly, although technically correct, I didn’t find the pictures that alluring in the printed proof I had.

I’m late to the eBook game. Not that it bothers me, I’m just not a fan. However, as medium, it’s going to get large. I’m reading fewer and fewer books these days, but my voracious literary appetite remains the same, I just tend to read more online, eschewing even newspapers, unless I’m in a desperate way.

Although all my personal material carries the copyright mark, in the digital age, here, an example, it’a “scraper” site, mirrors another site, so although there’s a copyright, once anything is let loose on the inter-web? Gone.

I understand. When I was under an NDA (Non-Disclosure-Agreement) for software development, the terms of the contract were so heinous I didn’t dare leak information. However, I understand the pathology. I bought a computer game, and then spent more time cracking the copy-protection rather than playing the game. Not to pirate the software, just to see if it could be done.

It can.

My horoscopes have been “pay-per-view” since 2003. I do monitor the hardware, but seriously, in order to beat the system, if someone spends that much time beating it? That’s up to them to work out with their gods, at their day of reckoning.

The best copy protection I’ve found, I do material that’s just odd enough that it doesn’t get translated into material other people can steal. Not too worried about theft like that.

I would like to be paid for my work, though. Just a lament.
