On Doniphan, upper valley, I believe, that’s the term.

Why this place hasn’t been discovered, like, on the Food Channel, or more perfect? That Triple D guy, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives? This place is a dive. Almost a drive-in. Incredible food. A single burrito was all it took. I asked the owner, a Taurus, what the secret was.

“There is no secret – I use pecan. Smoke it on the pecan wood. No secret.”

My hostess concurred, “See, she worked here for years, then bought the place when he was going to retire.”

I assumed that would be Johnny.

The surprise is no food channel TV host has found this place and exploited its inherent goodness. One kind of food, served one way, done right.

I watched as she chopped the beef brisket for the burrito, a tortilla torpedo of hand-chopped brisket, onions, pickles, mustard, hot sauce, all applied in a sparing manner so the full flavor of the brisket can ooze out the end.

While there’s an extensive menu, the single best thing – had it every time, and it’s always been excellent, the brisket burrito. Perfect. Not just good, excellent.
