Red Hibiscus

It’s a red hibiscus growing in my mother’s garage. The plants were moved inside ahead of a forecast of freezing weather in North Texas.

While not nearly as large as the more southern and summer hibiscus, this one still had a ruby heart.

Hibiscus: my flower (after all, rhubarb doesn’t flower). One year we had a deep freeze (-10 degrees!) and all the hibiscus bushes died. Very sad. Hasn’t been that cold since (23 years), so I guess it was a once-a-century freeze.

Hibiscus is the national flower of Malaysia, which is our neighboring country. Plenty of them around my neighborhood and they bloom all year long due to our hot climate.
