What I Love About Texas

Absurdities.

Texas Surf Calendar

Gulf Coast, The Texas Riviera. What is so special about this image, not the “Texas Surf Calendar” itself, but the sticky note on it: just ask your barista.

The Boots.

No place do I find the exhibition, the public display of oddity more prevalent than in the very fabric and texture of the Texas landscape. The boots outside North Star Mall, in San Antonio. Perfect example.

Hollywood Babylon notwithstanding.

The boots are icons, handiwork of Texas Artist and troublemaker, “Daddy O.” I’m guessing, two, three stories tall? To me, the boots look like Lucchese Ostrich, vintage, from the 1970’s or earlier.

Just a guess. I’ve got images of that artist’s other work, including the big mouth bass in the lake by Austin’s Hula Hut. There’s also a few dancing frogs left over, on top of a truck stop that sells Willie’s Bio-Diesel, in Carl’s Corner (TX).

More absurdities, more native weirdness.

We celebrate our oddity. Or, in the example of the boots, erect it as a monument. Or, erect a monument to it. Or, like the boots? Both.
