First Novels and Horoscopes

First Novels and Horoscopes

In my various reading lists, I’ve got a couple of books that I go back to and reread, which speaks well for a hard copy of a book, rather than the slightly ephemeral digital version of a book, see also for members only

There’s an essence of raw and unfinished in first novels. There’s an excitement and expectancy that is lacking in later works. There’s a lack of refinement, frequently. Why I like those first novels.

The way it works, the novel take off in one direction, then, halfway through, maybe three-quarters or two-thirds, there’s a shift. Not a problem with plot holes and visual inconsistencies in first works.

Which makes them each week, a lot like my horoscopes.
