According to Mark Twain, “There are three kinds of lies — lies, damned lies, and statistics.”

Pretty sure that quote is in the Pink Cake collection.

Statistics

Plucked from the Internet, “You spend 80% of your time doing 20% of the work that makes you happy.” Another gem plucked from the nether–world of cyberspace? “It’s 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration.”

For me? Both are wrong. To quote Mark Twain a second time, “There are three kinds of lies — lies, damned lies, and statistics.”

Moving households, a year back or more, unsettled, then I got settled into a new routine that is like the old routine. An average day, I get to spend four or five hours with writing and research, new ways to explain old concepts, over and over. It’s exciting and exacting work. I can spend up to 8 or 10 hours doing this, on an average work day.

A year later, there’s a very comfortable rhythm. Commute to Ausin a few times in a month, listening to Shakespeare, that eats up a whole day. Pleasant surroundsings and wonderful Austin personalties makes it worthwhile.

Letting go of frantic airport races, the allure of travel has not waned, but in practical application? I travel less these days. I spend much less time fishing. I get to spend more time with my books, and I get to spend more time writing. Research and writing, with the added benfit that my kind of research can appear a bit circuitous and serendipitous — to an outside observer.

Statistics

So, accoding to those Internet-sourced numbers, I’ve hit my sweet spot.

“There are three kinds of lies — lies, damned lies, and statistics.”

Maybe some days? The numbers do lie.
