Revisiting a classic, as I was looking for something to read, and the novel was on sale, despite the fact that I have a nice, pristine, first edition. Pulp type fiction at a pulp-type price. At this point the book is more than a decade old. Still rocked along in a solid fashion and not too many dated allusions.

Just a couple of quotes as I read along, over the last few days.

Nuclear Jellyfish – Tim Dorsey

“That would explain why us men think we’re in charge, but from time to time have a paranormal sensation that our free will is fatefully controlled by invisible puppet strings. Predestination is just another word for sex.”

“But they universally possess the same prehistoric genetic memory. Doesn’t matter where you find them—Miami, Budapest, the mountains of Peru, those remote islands off New Zealand where they just discovered a tribe that’s never seen a wheel—the women are all hardwired with the identical life drive.”

“Which is?”

“To change you.”

Sad, but true. Too true, no?

“Serge placed a hand on his pal’s shoulder. “Coleman, there are three—and only three—kinds of people in this world: Those who don’t know they’re damaged and blame others; those who realize they’re damaged and blame others; and then people like you and me, who wear damage like comfortable pajamas.”

Nuclear Jellyfish – Tim Dorsey

“It’s my life’s motto: If you’re not willing to invent cool-sounding bullshit about yourself, don’t expect others to.”

There’s a reason I like this character so much.

“How on earth did you dream this up? Home Depot! Whenever I’m suffering a creative block, I wander the aisles and ideas flood!”

Always admire an author for including a blueprint.
