The Magician, or, in this iteration, the Magus? It represents a common over all the elements. There’s, counterclockwise, Fire, Air, Earth, and Water. Or the elements as represented.

The four elements correspond to the three states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and fire? That’s pure energy.
That particular deck, it’s close to thirty years old. Had it a long time, creased and worn. From my table in San Antonio, TX.
