Favorite Apps 2019

While the use of an iPad is nothing new, I’ve turned to using it more and more for work, almost exclusively. Especially with my varied appearance option, see:

The front screen of my bog-standard iPad? That tells a lot. I read a lot. I write, primarily for the web, but I write a great deal. Then, the current iteration for work, as a consulting astrologer?

For writing, I have two apps on the front page, Ulysses and Apple’s own Pages. Because they both sync across the Apple ecosystem, I use both, I tend to save Pages for longer format material that is intended for print publication whereas the web material? Daily, weekly, &c? I use Ulysses with its convenient publishing options, for me, mostly a WordPress tool. I will admit, though, I still have a few manuscript projects in Pages, as it’s good for that.

The next series of apps that I use? The three “reading” apps, Apple’s Books (, iBooks), Amazon’s Kindle, and the local library’s cloudLibrary. Depends on what I’m reading, as I prefer the look and feel of Apple’s Books best, but in pinch? Kindle on the iPad works almost as well, and the local library, I have love/hate with its software, but I use it — a lot. Love everything but the book-reading software itself. Even then the cloudLibrary thing does have accurate pagination — page numbers correspond to the print version. I like that.

Book reading? I prefer the stock Apple Books best, but any one of the three is what I’m currently reading. Sometimes, there might be more than one book open on the device.

Finally, the work stuff. I switched over on programs that I use for astrology chart calculations because of the Apple Updated system software. So there is that; the new program, as expected, works as I expect it. Makes charts, I read them, enough said. Called “iPhemeris.” Cute, huh.

The other part the working puzzle, though is the way to record the reading itself, and that’s where to Voice Record app goes to work. I used it to record the chimes I use as a sound effects — meditation timer. Other than that? Voice Record has become my simple yet strong audio engine.

These are a few of my favorite things?

Showing a screenshot of the way I arrange the opening page on my one iPad? That’s kind of personal, but it also gives a clue as to process, my process, and what I deem most important.

How I work.

As the year draws to a close, I’ve switched over to nothing but i-tablets and phones for work, and while that does limit some of what I can do? Like a good stoic, it also sharpens my existing tools. Forces me to improve my thinking.

Giving myself a pause, though, looking at the software that I use, like that I use a lot? On a daily basis? That helps, and makes a fitting way to start wrapping up this year.
