Enemies of the state

History & enemies of the state

It’s an old piece, and I am unsure if it was the big splash when it first surfaced. Possible movie tie-in with some star? Faint recollections on my part, “Before my time.”

But the point is, glance through the article about a Japanese soldier who refused to surrender for years, and the motivation behind that.

It’s that “Fight to the death,” sentiment. More important, it’s about trying understand an enemy where the shame of surrender is worse than death.

I’ve wanted to extend this discussion, as it leaves an open-ended series of questions about empires, and enemies of the state. In these tenuous times, I used to think the enemies were elsewhere, but with the current conditions?

Rhetoric and media seems to be winning.

There’s an echo from our past, and there’s an echo from what has passed recently, a reminder to watch for the rhetoric and media — learn to discern. Too bad more people don’t channel surf news anymore; that would help.
