The meaning of the eclipse?

There was an eclipse, a few years back, partially observable in San Antonio and Austin, and it fell on a day when I was doing a day-care routine. Real grandparents were busy or otherwise not available, and I had possession, rather she ran me around, but I was theoretically in charge of a 6-year old.

Fishing buddy’s kid.

I used the example in video, which I was doing at the time, and I’ve long since abandoned that media, still, it was an amusing analogy.

At the time of the eclipse, we were noshing on subway sandwiches because that’s what she wanted, having never been there before, and she got to order exactly what she wanted, basically ham and cheese on white bread. We sat down, almost exactly at the moment of the eclipse, and she looked at me, as I was fiddling with the camera on the phone, “Can I get my iPad out of the truck?”

“No,” I said, “we’re supposed to talk.”

She looked disgusted, a mew of distaste in scowl across her wee little face, “You’re just going to sit there like my parents and look at your phone the whole time.”

I clicked “send” on the picture, proof that the child had food in front of her, then I placed the phone in my pocket, turning my whole attention to her.

I suppose, that’s an easier goal if one isn’t an actual parent.

It’s a lesson that ties to a cycle from years past, and yet remains remarkably relevant today.
