I am not scheduled in Austin at the rock shop until August 11. Some family business dictated a quick trip to Austin, and Kerbey at Mueller was a convenient meeting place. Predictably quality food, I had a fried-green tomato benedict.

Business concluded, we split the bills. Family, sometimes, never mind.

Glancing around the new developments at the old airport, to lament lost old Austin, I noticed the pen I used to sign my credit card receipt: Kirby (steakhouse), spelled “Kirby.”

I can see this misses on so many levels but it was really funny, in the moment, and that evocatively subtle hint that vestiges of old Austin are still there.
