Misquoted!

“Oh, internet, thou art an evil, foul-mouthed wench!”
–Shakespeare

There was a quote, popped up on social media, and I recognized part of the quote, but something was missing.

As it appeared on Social Media:

“It’s one thing to be tempted,
Another thing to fall.”
–Shakespeare
Measure for Measure

There’s a weird theme of corrupt polticians, hyperbole, and contradiction that runs through the play that quote’s drawn from, Measure for Measure. Shakespeare’s Italianate version of “Sex, Lies, and Videotapes.”

Measure for Measure quote

I rarely believe, or, for that matter, fact-check vile material spewed on the inter-webs. But a quote from Shakespeare that I “sort of” recognize?

Properly?

‘Tis one thing to be tempted, Escalus,
Another thing to fall.
Angelo in Shakespeare’s
Measure for Measure (II.i.17-18)

If one is going to try and quote Shakespeare in permanent meme? Best to get that quote correct. In context makes it way funnier, in a bleak way. Never said I was right in the head.
