In the early days, I used to run a contest, trivia questions, and the rewards were my astrology chart reports — delivered via email.

Fun, for me, as there was plenty of interaction, and then, the idea that I could come up with arcane bits of trivia, most of it collected and dumped from my own brain.

As the “internet” aged, though, and not long after Google started to grow towards its mighty stance, the trivia question that required books, personal stories, and a working knowledge of some arts & sciences? All lost its appeal.

Pop the question in a search engine, get an answer, where’s the fun — for me — in that?

So the Conests and Prizes are not as common anymore. In part, the ubiquitous search engine sucked the joy right out of the concept, and then, mention “free” on the web, and the demands gets too high, with common decency falling away.

The Latin motto for my crest can’t be translated by machine, though, and that stands tall and strong:

LAETI EDIMUS QUI NOS SUBIGANT!
