Masks are Required in-store

The latest missive from my other home in Austin, Nature’s Treasures?

Masks are Required in-store

Simply put, “masks are required in the store.” Not a lot of room for equivocation or my preferred wiggle room? Straight-up demand.

Like, “No shoes, no shirt, no service?”

(see fineprint for details)

That commentary brings up two short tales, about the way things used to be. I’ve used these stories before, but they bear repeating, in light of current trends.

The old Tamale House #3, Airport and 51St? I was hanging out with a — think she was Leo sun sign — but my memory is certainly fallible. She needed me and my truck, at the time, or something, hot summer day, I hopped in the truck bereft of a shirt. Lean and summer-bronze, sure, that was a long time ago.

We stopped, the most expensive item on the menu at the time? $3 plate filled with something, at the Tamale House. Got two, she paid. I lacked a shirt, but it was alright to dine-in, as it was a dive. I think they only had two tables, and it was lunch time. The preponderance of traffic tended to be non-English speaking workers. I was the weird white-boy with no shirt. Probably barefoot, too.

Memories are tricky like that.

The other recollection, still, in old East Austin, a student ghetto, really, student barrio, back in the day when it was a sketchy neighborhood. Physics grad student was next door, Virgo, not that it matters, our joke? “It really is rocket science.”

Moving day, him, me, my truck, and an Aries buddy. We finished hauling the furniture and stopped at Amy’s Ice Cream on Guadalupe, pronounced “GWAD-ah-loop.” Three guys on that hot summer’s afternoon, front of a truck with no AC? Three guys, all in shorts, but only two shirts, and two sets of flip-flops. Grad students, couldn’t drink beer and do graduate stuff.

Both stories are true, times and places old Austin supported with a more relaxed atmosphere. That being noted? At that time, what is now Nature’s Treasures was the old Army-Navy store.

Masks are Required in-store

Currently, the store requires masks. As a retail person, myself, I understand. This is an old debate, and while it is open to discussion, I’m sure, I’m vaxed and waxed myself, it is well-within the legal guidelines to require a mask for everyone entering.

Not comfortable with a mask, anymore? Unwilling to wear a mask? Then please, don’t come by.

I have one buddy who got the corona — he’s a bit weird — he’s a marathon runner. Last time I saw him, this was post-covid for him, he had on two masks. Paper mask under a cloth mask.

He didn’t want to risk future infection. He really didn’t want to go back.

He gets it.

Masks are Required in-store

At the store, masks are required. Uncomfortable with a mask? I’m always available by phone. But, as a reminder, unlike the old Tamale House or Amy’s? Masks are Required in-store.
