The Full Moon Coffee Shop

The Full Moon Coffee Shop — A Novel by Mai Mochizuki (Author), Jesse Kirkwood (Translator)

Saw it on a bookshelf. Saw it at the library. Saw it on a bookshelf at the library. Caught my eye, time and again. Turns out?

It’s my jam. Done in Japanese, a parable?

“I’m just telling her the truth. The stars don’t decide your future. All they do is help you choose one for yourself.” Page 58.

True. The stars incline but do not dictate.

To my ear? Eerily reminiscent of Paul Coelho, &c. The deceptively lightweight yet heady and significant little books that pack much into small spaces. Semi-mystical, the airy world of magical realism and pure magic. Fairy tale? Three interwoven shorts? Three intertwined characters tightly bound by fate?

I suppose, some of the art lies in the translation, but whatever.

Almost read it all in one sitting, phone rang (Gemini) and almost rushed out to buy copies to give away, “Here, you need to read this!”
