Good Material
Think I’ll be honest, the bookstore display of this title, the cover itself, it was what attracted me, and repulsed me, at the same time. The original text I looked at online? Suggested it was a lot like High Fidelity, the excellent Nick Hornby title.
“What is that thing they say? Poetry is the most reviled and redundant art form, everyone rolls their eyes at it and takes the piss out of it. But the second that something shit happens in our lives, it’s the first recourse we have.” Page 42.
This makes it a comedy of manners? So very British?
“Remember: a broken heart is a jester’s greatest prop.” Page 62.
That it is, possibly the basis for more good material for everyone.
Good Material
I wouldn’t compare it to High Fidelity, although, there are parallels to my own existence, I did find it a little too hopeful? But that could be the cynic in me, but as one English author suggested, “You call me a cynic, but I’m a realist.”
Enjoyed the way London was like a backdrop for story. It’s a different world. Keen eye and sharp wit, juxtaposed against the backdrop of a pre-pandemic break-up. After all, every romantic break-up is good material.
