Writing Rituals
Off a recommended sub-stack? Some author had a piece about about how writing a blog almost every day sharpened his wits, gave direction to his writing, and helped him output 80k+ words in a year, plus a couple of good essays.
In college, I didn’t get it , but after I transferred to the university, it started to make more sense. One author, teacher, professor, he had a character who would, with zealot-like fervor, write four manuscript pages a day. Translated, that’s roughly a 1,000 words each day. Roughly.
That was an epiphany for me, just write 1,000 words every day. In the past, I have done that and I’ve got a two or three novel length manuscripts floating around. Never got the narrative correct, but it was close enough to call each a near-miss. Too busy with recent travel and appearances, I’ve been unable to maintain that pace, but it doesn’t bother me. I also, as the planets dictate, take enforced breaks when, like Mercury is retrograde, and so forth.
Writing Rituals
Emily at Writing Witchery posed a question about writing and ritual. Think I covered a lot this, or, “What I learned-blogging-14-years ” — dated but still timely.
Two notes, one which is heavily reiterated material, “Write before you pee in the morning,” (thanks Bart).
The other is simpler, just write, every day.
Look: I’m as surprised as the readers, I never know what might come out. That’s where the magic happens.

Enjoy the ride-along.
