From Henry V

From Henry V

“Even so our houses, and ourselves, and children,
Have lost, or do not learn for want of time,
The sciences that should become our country,
But grow like savages—as soldiers will
That nothing do but meditate on blood—
To swearing and stern looks, defus’d attire,
And every thing that seems unnatural.”

Duke of Burgundy in
Shakespeare’s Henry V (V.ii.56-62)

shakespeare glyphShakespeare’s Henry V, as mediation on war and political fighting?

The pull-out quote that caught my attention, from an older Shakespeare newsletter?

The sciences that should become our country,
But grow like savages—as soldiers will
That nothing do but meditate on blood—

Just seemed to fit. The odd bit was finding it buried in old scholarship, and finding new ways to interpret the old works.

I read it aloud, softly, to myself, a c couple of times.
