Mars in Retrograde

I was chatting with a friend about the symbolism of Mars. She was dead sure she had it right, “Mars is aggression” (in traditional astrology, Mars is the Lesser Malific), so, in her estimation, parroted from generic sources, “when Mars is retrograde, there’s less trouble in relationships.”

Nice try. We talked about some recent events in her life, the life of her clients, and then some related matters. She concluded that there was an extra layer of tension, not normally present, in a number of relationships. “So that’s why so many people are breaking up?”

You could say that.

In about ten percent of the population, Mars is retrograde in the natal (birth) chart. This makes the next month a sweet spot for those people. For the rest of us? Misery? Depends on how miserable you want to be.

Suppose that a god announced that you were going to die tomorrow “or the day after.” Unless you were a complete coward you wouldn’t kick up a fuss about which day it was – what difference could it make? Now recognize the difference between years from now and tomorrow is just as small.

I was in the mountains of New Mexico, maybe a week ago. Just outside of El Paso, really. When I left, at the last minute, I grabbed a heavy overcoat since the weather looked suddenly cold.

I never needed that heavy overcoat. I wore it once, in earnest, when we were all waiting on the truck to be brought up from parking, as we were leaving. Valet. Once. And that time, I could’ve just stood in doors, too. Once. And I didn’t ever really need it. So I was toting this big, bulky winter overcoat all around with me.

Mars is backwards. Doesn’t mean anything bad will happen. But it does suggest a time to exert a little more caution than usual. Whether it’s the (possible) winter weather, or a stormy relationship issue.
