Round Top?

Round Top?

Round Top, seriously?

Like Gruene, TX – “gently resisting change…”

Round Top, TX: pop. 87. What the sign said.

One of the hot tips for seeing a show in Round Top/Winedale? From years of experience, freeze a standard water bottle, the 500 ml size, freeze one for each show, then stick the frozen water bottle in a pocket.

Which was odd, this one time, didn’t need the frozen water bottles as the clouds, threat of rain, and relatively cool temperature was downright pleasant. Still, had the frozen water bottles with us.

Stayed at The Flophouze, and hadn’t been there since 2019? During the intervening years, I tried a number of vrbo and ubiquitous airBnB places, but sorting out my summer schedule? The container hotel was the least expensive, and for me, a known experience. A better experience.

“This is bachelor pad,” she said.

“?”

“The bathroom doesn’t have a place for a woman to put her things.”

Noted. The single sink was part of the kitchenette. In my mind, it was a much more efficient arrangement than the other one. Shotgun style, nicely insulated, quiet, post-modern, anti-farmhouse chic, rustic yet genteel and quite clean, almost spartan. Urban — with cows, lowing in the fields.

Can’t say enough nice things about the place: the Flophouze.

A superior experience.

Timely Recollection I’ve long extolled the relative virtues of always traveling with a book, a book-book, paperback, hardback, thin, thick, mystery, pot-boiler, romance, classical, or textual, just something.

I got some reading done, not on the usual tablet, but as a book. Old text, not really available online. That was refreshing.

Not even about Shakespeare, either.

Cool, huh.

Waking up with cows, and a horse, literally outside the door? Back-to-back with absurdist Western American literature.

Some would say, “the irony of it all,” but it isn’t ironic.

Smithville, TX: Comfort Cafe.

Seeing the plays in that order, and only going to the night shows, as there’s a “matinee” on Saturday and Sunday, but doing it like this? I only hope I can remember for next season, this is the way to do it. Maybe try to time with hurricanes and rain storms, too. Cooler. More enjoyable.
