Process versus
“He told me that the fundamental knowledge was deeper than the skillset, and he was right.”
Quote from an interview, forwarded by Virgo.
But instead of teaching “(insert sign here) means (generalization)” I favor seeking common grounds, and personal observation.
Brought back memories from an old Shakespeare professor. He taught straight, strict, fundamental interpretations of the plays. Little historical referents, not much elaboration, the text itself serving as the main focus. Taught as literature, but still, not much more than some “less than judicious” reading and acting out certain passages.
However, he encouraged a research process that has served me well over the years, it’s about accumulating data points, gathering a wide variety of research material from disparate sources, then synthesizing — distilling — information.
A research process is infinitely more valuable than specific steps.
