Pericles, the Prince of Tyre
Of interest, the first instance of me quoting that play in my horoscopes seems to be around 1997.
I can’t seem to find it, and I was sure there was another Winedale-Pericles, but it must be hidden under some other entry or a fragment of faulty memory.
Presented by the Cold Frame Collective, I snuck into the almost last show, as it was only running from August 15 to 30. Saturday matinee.
The pacing was impeccable, and although I had trouble hearing the chorus, I knew enough of the story to keep up and then, there was also the tempo. The first three acts moved along quite briskly.
Basic, black box theatre for presentation. No props, or just one, a casket-like box. Part of the plot. Very limited costume. All acting. Impressive chops.
“The curse of heaven and men succeed their evils!” Cleon (1.4.104)
Announced before the show started, please silence all electronics and don’t have any out during the show. Bereft of basic note taking, I missed a few queues and marques, but no matter for a summer’s day.
I knew the ending, styled as romance, “And they lived happily ever after…” I still shed a tear, as wrapped as I was in the performance. Really, quality acting. Looking forward to to more from a brilliant troop.
